The Unity convention only comes around every four years.  I’ve been going to them ever since they started.  This time the convention is in Las Vegas in August, and I’m hoping to persuade dozens of journalists to make Unity 2012 their summer destination.

Meet members of NAHJ, NAJA, AAJA, and NLGJA at Mandalay Bay.

Pre-registration ends on June 29th.  Register today! Go to:  Unity Convention 2012

Let me know if you’re going. Find me on Twitter and Facebook.

Rebecca Aguilar is an Emmy award winning reporter.  She’s also a board member with NAHJ and SPJ Fort Worth.

WOAI-TVWOAI-TV in San Antonio has one smart promotions department.  I just have to put that out there.

I don’t know if the station was aiming for crossover marketing in hopes of getting more Latino viewers for its 6:30 newscast, but its new news promo is clever.

Check it out.

The promo highlights the beautiful news anchor, Elsa Ramon along with the rest of her news team. You may know her from her TV days in Dallas and Los Angeles.

I know some of you may say this feeds into stereotypes of Mexicans. As a journalist and Mexican American, I don’t have a problem with it.  They brought a little Latino flavor into its news promos and had fun with it.   And if they had to highlight gorgeous Latinas along the way—fantastic.

Let’s get real; who didn’t grow up with mom or “abuelita” glued to her telenovelas. Kudos to WOAI’s promotions department for producing a memorable news promo.
